Andreas F. Staffel (DE) – Two glasses past Midday

Andreas F. Staffel about his piano piece “Two glasses past Midday”:

As far as I can think back musically, I had a close connection to the composer titan Beethoven (and Bartok) from my earliest childhood, which accompanied me through every phase of my life. During the preparation for this composition I asked myself: which piano pieces by L. v. B. would you take with you to the famous desert island? When I heard island, I spontaneously thought of Shakespeare’s Storm and then of course of Beethoven´s Storm Sonata. Thus its abysmal second movement in particular became a model for my composition. Time seems to have stood still here. Prospero answers Ariel’s corresponding question in Shakespeare: It´s two glasses past midday…everything fades away like in a two-hour glass – the boundaries between dream and reality, everything seems to blur. Rugged sounds float in extreme registers on the abyss. The middle pedal keeps the sounds of Beethoven’s name silently pressed in all the time, like an inscription carved in stone. The resulting reverberation always leads to new sound discolorations. We also encounter sound splinters from the first movement (recitative) as well as from the Hammerklavier Sonata. The end ebbs away with fragile tremolo figures.  “The great globe itself, / Yea, all which it inherit, shall dissolve; / And, like this insubstantial pageant faded, / Leave not a rack behind. We are such stuff / As dreams are made on, and our little life / Is rounded with a sleep” (Shakespeare, The Tempest). The piece was written in March 2019 and dedicated to the pianist Susanne Kessel. Berlin, 31.03.2019, Andreas F. Staffel. “
