Georg Gräwe (DE) – Behauptung und Nachtrag X

Georg Gräwe about his piano piece “Behauptung und Nachtrag X”:

“Of Beethoven’s late piano sonatas op. 101 has always been my favourite – especially the first movement with its bitter-sweet ternderness that would later become one of Brahms’ trademarks. (Of course, its a love song, though not to the dedicatee Dorothea von Ertmann but to Ludwig’s “Immortal Love (Antonie Brentano).

“Behauptung und Nachtrag” is a series of recent piano pieces inquiring into the interrelation of musical phrases in a variety of ways. The title is an abstraction from the “antecedent and consequent” to a specific number of bars in symmetrical order but rather to a form of rhetoric.

The material (melodic and harmonic) for “Behauptung und Nachtrag X” is based on the hexachord from the first two bars of Beethoven’s sonata (gis-a-h-cis-d-e) and its complement (c-es-f-g-b-fis). Apart from that the piece is supposed to be a 21st-century portrait of what used to be called “innigste Empfindung”.”
